What Students Gain

Students of mathematics at UMLAC acquire quantitative skills, problem-solving ability, and clarity of thinking and reasoning that provide the basis for success and leadership in many careers.

Depending on the track taken, graduates are qualified to pursue Master’s level study at institutions of higher learning in mathematics, computer science, education, business administration, and other mathematics-related disciplines. They enter a wide variety of technology-based careers. Many of our graduates have gone on to successful careers in mathematics itself, in engineering, physics, software engineering, information technology, teaching, accounting, management, and other areas.

Consciousness-based ApproachPaper A Unified Approach to Developing Intuition in Math

The Consciousness-BasedSM approach to studying mathematics at MUM includes comprehensive study of the traditional mathematical subjects, but also includes the “MUM routine”: twice daily practice of Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation® technique, getting adequate rest at night, eating organic food, and focusing on one’s own holistic development.

Antidote to Math Anxiety

Stress can impair the functioning of the brain’s prefrontal cortex, leading to difficulty understanding and integrating abstract concepts. Stress is often the root of “math anxiety”. The deep rest of Transcendental Meditation has been found to relieve even deeply rooted stress and thereby produce a calmer, clearer mind with which to tackle mathematics.

Developing Mathematical Insight

Doing mathematics successfully includes both intellectual analysis and intuitive insight. Modern educational practices in mathematics have been reasonably successful in developing intellectual understanding, but have largely left the development of intuitive insight to chance.

Practice of Transcendental Meditation has been found to develop creativity, clear thinking, health, and vitality. It develops the ability to let the mind settle down and experience the quiet inner wholeness that is essential to grasping a mathematical concept or solving a problem. Connecting Mathematics to the Student’s own Intelligence

Mathematics is the study of abstract patterns and relationships that underlie all physical reality. Thus studying mathematics is studying the functioning of intelligence itself. Faculty at MUM, in consultation with the founder of MUM, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, have developed Unified Field Charts, relating all parts of mathematics to each other and to their common source in intelligence. They have also developed Main Point Charts, relating mathematical principles learned in class each day to basic principles of the development of consciousness, and to the students’ own inner experience of pure consciousness during the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

This allows the student to see deep connections between the functioning of their own intelligence and mathematical knowledge. Often for the first time, students experience mathematics as a normal, natural part of themselves and of life

UMLAC offers a BS degree in Mathematics in a choice of two tracks:

A complete foundational experience in mathematics, together with a senior project in an advanced area of mathematics.

This track blends computer science courses into the mathematics curriculum and leads directly into the Master of Science in Computer Science at UMLAC.
